La Zona Arqueológica de Cañada de Los Gatos es un conjunto emblemático en el ámbito de la arqueología prehispánica insular conformado por diversos enclaves que antaño formaron una unidad; un poblado costero que se originó en la desembocadura del barranco de Mogán y que fue creciendo hasta convertirse en un gran asentamiento en el que se concentraba un importante núcleo poblacional: las casas de piedra que forman el poblado de La Cañada de Los Gatos, La Casa de Las Siete Esquinas, los enterramientos en cistas y túmulos de La Puntilla y Las Crucecitas y las cuevas de enterramiento, aparecen dispersas en la vertiente oriental del barranco muy cerca de su desembocadura y son los vestigios arqueológicos que se conservan en la actualidad.

Declarado Bien de Interés Cultural por su interés científico, su importancia dentro del marco cronocultural de las poblaciones indígenas y por su estado de conservación, la Zona Arqueológica de Cañada de Los Gatos es un asentamiento principalmente costero, ubicado en un lugar estratégico, elegido por los antiguos habitantes de la isla por las buenas condiciones que ofrecía el medio: buen clima para vivir, agua corriente continua procedente del barranco, buenas tierras, buenas condiciones climáticas para el cultivo y una costa cercana que ofrecía abundantes especies marinas, componente importante en su dieta. Así lo atestiguan los restos encontrados a través de las excavaciones arqueológicas que han proporcionado una antigüedad al poblado de más de 1300 años.

Hoy, esta Zona Arqueológica está preparada para la visita con unos recorridos que comunican las diferentes áreas del poblado y que ofrecen al visitante un paseo excepcional a través del cual conocerá el modo de vida de los antiguos canarios a la vez que disfrutará de unas espectaculares vistas del Puerto de Mogán y de la desembocadura del barranco desde su mirador-cafetería.

The Archaeological Zone of Cañada de los Gatos is an emblematic landmark on the island’s pre-hispanic archaeological scene, made up of diverse enclaves which years ago used to form an individual unit; a coastal population that sprang up along the mouth of the ravine at Mogán and developed into a large settlement with an important urban structure. The stone houses that made up the village of La Cañada de los Gatos, La Casa de Las Siete Esquinas, the burial pits and tombs of La Puntilla and Las Crucecitas and the burial caves, are scattered around the eastern slopes of the ravine, very near to its mouth. These are the archaeological remains that are preserved to this day.

The Archaeological Area of Cañada de Los Gatos has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest for its scientific relevance, its importance within the Chronocultural framework of its indigenous people, and for its state of preservation. It is a coastal settlement that lies in a strategic spot, and was chosen by the ancient inhabitants of the island for the ideal environmental conditions it offered them: a fine climate, running water from the ravine, good quality soil, fine climatic conditions for farming and a coastal location which offered abundant marine species, a key component of their diet. This is what the archaeological excavation work has uncovered. It is estimated to be more than 1,300 years old.

Nowadays, this Archaeological Area is set up for visitors to walk around, linking up the different areas of this former settlement, offering an exceptional experience by providing an insight into the lifestyle of the Ancient Canarians, while at the same time offering superb views over the Port of Mogán and the mouth of the ravine from its viewpoint and cafeteria.

Die archäologische Zone der Cañada de los Gatos nimmt eine herausragende Stellung in der prähispanischen Inselarchäologie ein. Die Anlage besteht aus mehreren Enklaven, die ursprünglich eine Einheit bildeten. Ihr Ursprung befand sich in dem Küstendorf, das an der Mündung der Schlucht Barranco de Mogán in das Meer angelegt wurde und sich zu einer umfangreichen Siedlung mit bedeutendem Bevölkerungsnukleus entwickelte. Heute erhalten sind das Haus der Sieben Ecken (Casa de las Siete Esquinas), die Steinkisten- und Tumulusgräber von La Puntilla und Las Crucecitas sowie die Grabhöhlen in Meeresnähe am östlichen Rand der Schlucht.

Aufgrund ihres herausragenden wissenschaftlichen Wertes, ihrer chronologisch-kulturellen Bedeutung und des guten Erhaltungszustands wurde die Archäologische Zone Cañada de Los Gatos als Kulturgut unter Schutz gestellt. Die Siedlung, die mit ihrer strategischen Lage an der Mündung der Schlucht überwiegend dem Meer zugewandt war, bot den aboriginen Menschen vorteilhafte Lebensbedingungen mit einem milden Klima, ständig fließendem Süßwasser in der Schlucht, guten Böden, günstiger Witterung für die Landwirtschaft und der Nähe des Meers mit seinem üppigen Nahrungsangebot. So belegen es die Funde der archäologischen Ausgrabungen, die das Alter der Anlage auf etwa 1300 Jahre datieren.

Zur Besichtigung der archäologischen Zone steht ein Rundweg zur Verfügung, der die verschiedenen Bereiche verbindet. Der Besuch bietet nicht nur eine außergewöhnliche Begegnung mit dem Leben der alten Kanarier, sondern auch spektakuläre Panoramablicke auf Puerto de Mogán und die Mündung der Schlucht von der Cafetería am Aussichtspunkt.
